Hooded Sweatshirt Mock-Up Templates

>> Saturday, 31 July 2010

Here are a few photographic templates suitable for clothing print mock-ups. I created these in response to the serious lack of clear and clean photographic templates for Hoodies. The photograph is of a B&C Europeanwear Hooded Sweatshirt. Colors are roughly based on both the B&C range and the Continental range.

Is Iron on Heat Transfer Paper Right for Your Project?

Author: Grace Enderlein

Iron on heat transfer paper can be used for applying custom graphics and text to t-shirts, sweatshirts and other fabric items. You can be as creative as you want by using a scanner or digital camera to capture and manipulate images, graphics, or logos, and transfer them to fabric using iron on heat transfer paper. It is simple to print multiple colors and intricate designs, and you can easily customize the output. Iron on heat transfer paper is great for small or large jobs.

Digital images can be transferred to light or dark fabric by printing an image on transfer paper and ironing it onto your fabric. Iron on transfer paper for white t-shirts is different than paper for dark t-shirts. If you are creating an image for a black or dark blue t-shirt, be sure to get the version of transfer paper for dark fabric for the images to transfer well.

Depending on the type of printer, you must choose the correct type of transfer paper in order to successfully print images on the fabric. Most t-shirt transfer paper is for inkjet printers. However, if you have a laser printer, there is iron on heat transfer paper available specifically for laser printers. It is recommended that you do not use the inkjet transfer papers in your laser printer. For best results, the fabrics must have at least 50% cotton content. Instructions must be followed carefully to achieve optimal results.

Many distributors and manufacturers carry a large selection of heat transfer products and supplies. They carry everything needed for heat transfer including inkjet and laser heat transfer papers for light and dark applications, heat transfer vinyl and foils, laser printer supplies, specialty papers, and heat press supplies.

Getting the best deal on buying T-Shirts to print

Bulk Orders of a Silk Screen T-shirt are the Cheapest

Author: Clint Jhonson

When you are buying cool t-shirts that are customized as per your tastes, you would like to get the best possible deal. The most excellent way to find the cheapest t shirt printing is to get quotes from various sellers from your locality as well as on the Net. A silk screen t-shirt purchased in bulk could be the cheapest option if you are looking for a huge order of the same design. So don’t settle for the first local printing shop that you come across. You would do well to do some research before you make a decision; it could help you save quite a bit.

If you employ the services of one of the online companies you will find that you will get quite a cheap rate for printing your cool t-shirts. These companies normally provide you with quotes that cover the cost of the t-shirts, design as well as the printing. Make a comparison of the quotes to ascertain which one will be the best bargain for you. Do bear in mind that the price per silk screen t-shirt will vary depending on your total order quantity. The price keeps coming down as the order quantity goes up.

In case of the silk screen t-shirt, you will find that the price normally goes up if you have more colors in your logo or design. But if you choose digital t-shirt printing, it doesn’t matter how many colors your design has at all. Also different t shirt printing companies will have different rates since each of them might use blank t shirts from different companies to print their cool t-shirts.

Also each t shirt printing company might have its own kind of machinery which can also have an impact on their printing charges. Even the cheapest t shirt printing company will have a set price so it would be best to compare them all before you place your order for cool t-shirts. For bulk orders you should opt for the silk screen t-shirt, it will really work out to be dirt cheap, the higher your order quantity is. And there will certainly be no compromise in the printing quality.

Instead of looking at the advances in digital t-shirt printing as a threat, screen printers should welcome it as an opportunity to serve customers in areas where they could not in the olden days. When a teenager walks in with a picture of his favorite rock band to be printed on a t-shirt, he would be refused in the past. But today, they can provide him cool t-shirts by using digital printing and if they have extra sophisticated machinery, even on a black t-shirt since it is not worthwhile to make a silk screen t-shirt for a single order.

So instead of being afraid that the advances in digital technology may put them out of the screen printing business, they should take advantage of what the new digital technologies have to offer them where expanding their business is concerned letting them serve their customers better with newer kinds of products in cool t-shirts. It will be a very long time before we find that a digital prints on a bulk order of t-shirts will end up cheaper and more durable as compared to a silk screen t-shirt.

Why Direct to Garment Printing is Superior to Screen Printing

Tshirt Printing - Why Direct to Garment Printing is Superior to Screen Printing

Author: Mark Barnes

Printing tshirts using Direct To Garment (DTG) printing, the process of printing to cotton based fabrics (i.e. tshirts) using a large format inkjet printer, is far superior to screen printing, the process of pressing inks into fabric through a stencil. It is more environmentally friendly, less time consuming and more cost effective for smaller runs.

DTG tshirt printing is more environmentally than screen printing. DTG uses water-based inks to printing directly onto clothing, this means that there are no excess inks used in the actual printing and the only waste that does occur is from the occasional print head cleaning – it should also be noted that head cleaning does not involve any external materials only ink. Of course, major head cleaning can be avoided by regular maintenance of the printer, and thus one head clean a day – a matter of millilitres – is usually sufficient. Then as long as waste ink is disposed of correctly, printing tshirts using the DTG method should have almost no environmental impact. Screen printing however has excess inks from parts of the stencil not printed to the tshirt and when screens are cleaned these excess inks are then washed down the drain.

The process of screen printing involves creating a stencil and then pressing inks through said stencil onto fabric. The stencil can be created by hand or photo emulsion, and for each colour of a design a new screen is needed. DTG uses only software and a computer to send a design directly to a printer and this can take a matter of seconds with all colours being printed at once. (On darker fabrics there is a white layer printed first and then the remaining colours). DTG is far less time consuming with regard to setup, and this is particularly useful when printing small runs of tshirts.

Smaller (less than 50) runs of tshirts are far more cost effective with DTG printing than screen printing. Minimal setup with DTG printing means that tshirt runs as low as 1 can be produced for a matter of $5 - $10 in materials (including tshirt) and for a print on white can take as little as 2minutes to produce. Screen printers may claim that on larger runs they can produce a much more economical print however with multiple colours, and then drying time this seems unlikely.

Printing tshirts using Direct To Garment printing is far superior to screen printing. Whilst both methods produce an excellent quality, DTG is far more environmentally friendly, is less time consuming, and more cost effective for smaller runs. Whilst screen printing is a tried and tested method of printing onto tshirts it seems that DTG printing is the way of the future.

Starting out with Custom T-Shirts.

Custom T-Shirts – The New Fad? by Razvan Jr

Have you ever wanted to design your own clothing? Do you ever see people wearing t-shirts with slogans on them and think “I could come up with something cool”. Well, with technology improving in the customized garment printing industry, you can now make custom t-shirts yourself or at a variety of online stores.

Printing them yourself is done with heat applied transfers. In my experience they are hard to do right at home with an iron. You really need a heat press which is much more expensive than just designing the shirt online and having someone else print it professionally. You want this to look great, right?

The first thing you’ll want to think about is if you’d like a slogan, a slogan with an image, or just an image. The pricing of custom t-shirts is usually based on how many colors the design you come up with. If you just have text with 1 color, it is way cheaper to print than say a photographic image. So if you are choosing to add an image, you’ll want that image to be as few colors as possible, unless you are ready to spend a lot.

Once you know what you want the shirt to say, you’ll want to start playing with fonts. Font selection can really improve the way the t-shirt looks. You want to choose something that is easy to read unless your goal is to have people staring at you for a while with a confused look on their face. Bolder fonts of course will print better, especially on darker colored tees. A custom tee with text that matches the graphic will be the best. So for example, you might want to pick a techno looking font for a shirt you are going to make about clubbing. Or you might want a computer font for a technical joke. The font selection for your idea is very important.

Now that you have your text ready and image if applicable, you need to choose what type of shirt it will be printed on. There are many choices available, normal tees, long sleeve, ringers, hooded sweatshirts, polo shirts, etc. There are cuts for more fitted shirts and cuts for women. Some of the better, more fashionable brand names are American Apparel, Bella, Gildan, and Royal Apparel. Of course a plain shirt is less expensive than a ringer or other more detailed shirt.

So once you have your shirt style, brand, color, text, and image picked out, you are ready to order your new customized t-shirt. There really isn’t a better way to express yourself with your clothes. I imagine with the improvements I mentioned earlier in the garment printing industry, we’ll see customizable jeans and other clothing coming soon!

Once the shirt arrives, you are now ready to show off how witty you are. You can get hooked on making custom t-shirts, as all you may be the envy of all your friends with your intellectual prowess being shown on your chest. Wear your design with pride and get ready for the compliments!

Why learn to screen print?

T-shirt Designers of Oversized Designs Should Learn to Screen Print for Themselves by Gary Jurman

While there are a bevy of websites across the internet that make it easier for small T-shirt designers to bring their designs to market, often times they can't accommodate some of the fashion trends most desired by contemporary designers. With the rise of trends like over-sized imprints and over-the-seams designs, t-shirt designers more and more find themselves at a disconnect with crowd-source t-shirt websites and most print-on-demand houses.

There are a few reason for the disconnect:
1.Many specialty imprints exceed the capabilities of most crowd-source websites. Many T-shirt websites use a print-on-demand model that utilizes digital printers or plot cutters and heat presses that don't modify easily.
2. Even if they can do the prints, unusual prints are more time-consuming and expensive to produce, meaning unless the design is a big hit, it doesn't help the bottom line.
3. Most small T-shirt designers only consider what they'd like to design, and don't give much thought to the production process until long after the concept phase.

So what's a designer to do when confronted with roadblocks put up by their once accessible outlets? When, contemporary problems don't find comfort with contemporary solutions, go old school. In other words, it's time to learn how to screen print and market for yourself.

At this point, a designer may be asking himself, "Why don't I just hire a screen printing shop to make the shirts for me?" The answer is, that is a great solution, bearing in mind one thing, you're going to need a pile of money to go that route. Screen print shops are geared for mass production, so they need to do either large runs, or charge sizable set-up fees to cover all the make-ready. Compound that with the massive size requirements for the equipment needed to do over-sized imprints in bulk, and you have an equation for high start-up hurdles. The only way an artist can afford to pay them is if he is sure his designs will be big sellers or he has very trusting investors.

Why does it make sense to screen print your designs for yourself when commercial screen printers don't do short runs? There are two reasons: a large part of the expense of paying screen printers is that you are paying for shop time in a place that is not set-up for short runs. It is cheaper and less space-intensive to set up your screen printing studio from the get-go for doing prototypes. Instead of paying money for your market samples, you'll pay in time --your time.

What does a designer need to go from zero to T-shirt design prototyping? Not as much as one might think. For starters, a one-car garage, a few hundred dollars, access to a hardware store and a screen printing supply house, and some good learning materials with sound advice about guerrilla screen printing, can take the designer quite far. After that, a designer simply needs time for developing a skill that most artists pick up fairly easily. Considering the alternatives, that short list is a pretty modest hurdle.

Even if you could find a screen printer to do short runs of your test designs at a low cost, there still is yet another reason for a T-shirt designer to learn screen printing. If you want to get serious about designing T-shirts, the experience of printing may lend you invaluable insights that most likely you couldn't get otherwise. The simple fact is, whenever you design anything, you really do need insight into the production process if you want to excel in that field. How your designs will be produced should not be an afterthought, but instead, an intrinsic part of the design phase.
